One of the projects that ClimateCare clients have helped to fund over the last four years has reached a significant milestone in its operation: sales of the New Lao Stove (NLS) throughout Cambodia reached one million units on 18th March this year.
Project developers GERES Cambodia have been managing the operation and stove roll-out since May 2003. They hail the landmark millionth stove sale as proof that “disseminating large numbers of improved cook stoves is not a dream anymore, but can be a reality”. It is a huge achievement for the project teams involved, managing the roll out of technology, as well as benefiting the environment, with emissions being reduced at significant scale through this volume of sales.
Through their efficiency, the Improved Cook Stoves (ICS) reduce domestic charcoal use as well as energy used in creating the charcoal in the first place. Both are valuable forms of reduced greenhouse gases that will positively impact the environment.
A spokesperson for GERES Cambodia celebrated their achievement by setting out their ongoing ambition; “I would invite all stovers in the world to work harder, think bigger and set longer term visions. There are two billion people around us waiting to use ICS for their daily cooking. They have the rights to use the ICS and we are obliged to fulfil their rights."
Driving change
Building on their success, GERES is setting up a “stove academy” in Cambodia dedicated to sharing the learning from its successful experience with other stove project developers. They are also using the knowledge and experience gained with the success of the NLS in urban areas of Cambodia to launch a new stove project targeting rural areas of the country: the new project is known as the Neang Kongrey Stove (NKS) project.
