Can the Voluntary Carbon Market help the 2 billion people that need access to smoke-free kitchens? Yes it can, argues Climate Care's Adam Harvey in an article published for the specialist magazine on efficient stoves, 'Boiling Point'.
The obstacles that have been preventing really large-scale funding of this technology are being overcome, in part due to the contribution of the Voluntary Carbon Market.
Efficient stoves have huge potential for saving carbon AND improving peoples lives. Climate Care has calculated that if they were made available to the 1.5 million families in sub-Saharan Africa that could benefit, well over 100 million tonnes of CO2 emissions would be cut every year - the same as that from the entire UK car fleet! And this on top of making kitchens smoke-free and healthy for millions.
