Hampton School has become the first in the country, and perhaps the world, to offset all the carbon emissions from school energy use and travel, including the school buses and overseas trips.
This is part of a broader initiative to reduce the school's environmental impact, and enthuse pupils on green issues. Working with Global Action Plan, pupils and staff have undertaken waste audits and introduced measures to reduce waste-to-landfill. The school has introduced a number of energy efficiency improvements, and is working with eco-architects to develop a state-of-the-art 'sustainability laboratory' within its biology department.
Mike Mason, founder of Climate Care, addressed the pupils during morning assembly earlier this year on the importance and urgency of tackling climate change:
"I am delighted at the enthusiasm that the pupils and staff of Hampton School have shown in their response to climate change. By measuring its carbon footprint, taking steps to reduce it and offsetting what remains Hampton is setting a great example of the kind of carbon responsibility we all need to show."
