“I set up Climate Care in order to make the biggest possible impact
in tackling climate change globally”

ClimateCare was set up in Oxford in 1997 by eco-entrepreneur Mike Mason. A passionate conservationist, Mike became aware that climate change is the biggest threat that mankind and our environment currently face and set up Climate Care as a means to fund projects that reduce greenhouse gases.

Since then, Climate Care has grown to become one of the world’s leading emission reduction companies, recognised for its innovation, leadership and expertise in the field of emission reduction projects.

Timeline

1997

Climate Care set up with a structure to ensure financial transparency and governance through its Environmental Steering Committee

1998

Began to use carbon offset funds as a means to restore rainforests

2001

Made its first carbon offset sale through the internet

2001

Mike Mason publishes papers on key principles of credible carbon reduction projects, anticipating UN additionality tools.

2004

First UK carbon offset company to produce an annual report detailing our performance and projects.

2004

First UK carbon offset company to develop an approach that focuses the majority of funds in sustainable energy projects, rather than tree planting

2004

Partnered with leading Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy, bringing carbon finance to pioneering sustainable development solutions.

2005

Contributed to the development of the first quality standards for the voluntary carbon market: the Gold Standard VER and Voluntary Carbon Standard.

2006

Pioneer Carbon set up as sister company to Climate Care to enable a quicker expansion of resources to meet current and forecast demand, headquartered in East Africa.

2007

Achieved 1 million tonnes of emission reductions.

2007

Developed pioneering methodology for efficient stoves projects for the voluntary market.
