The Co-operative Group takes an ethical stance to the way it conducts all aspects of its business. Environmental protection, poverty alleviation, and tackling climate change are all key issues for the entire organisation. ClimateCare has been working in partnership with the Co-op for over ten years and carbon offsetting continues to be an important pillar of the Co-operative’s strategy.
The Co-operative offsets many elements of its business, including;
- The Co-operative Group offsets 110% of its operational emissions
- The Co-operative Bank works with ClimateCare as positive proof of its ethical approach to the mortgage business. For every mortgage sold, the Bank offsets one fifth of the household's anticipated CO2 emissions with ClimateCare. It will continue to do this over the lifetime of the mortgage, at no cost to the house owner.
- Co-op Motor insurance policies automatically include an offset to balance a proportion of each customer’s motoring
- Co-operative FuneralCare offsets 100% of its operational emissions
The Group are offsetting these CO2 emissions on behalf of their customers through a number of projects including:
- The funding of fuel efficient stoves in Cambodia which reduce demand for non-renewable wood fuel;
- The funding of wind turbines in India;
- The reforestation of the Kibale national park in Uganda;
- The funding of biogas production units in rural India.
