Background
The Kitroongruang Biogas Energy Project developed by Thai Biogas Energy Company Ltd is an anaerobic digestion project, which treats wastewater from the cassava processing factory owned by Kitroongruang Tapioca Factory Limited Partnerships in Rayong, Thailand.
The project
 |
A 'Covered In-Ground Anaerobic Reactor' (CIGAR) will be installed. The CIGAR will remove the organic material in the wastewater, thus reducing the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and subsequent CH4 (methane) emissions released into the atmosphere. The biogas produced will be used to create heat to dry the wet tapioca starch cake, displacing fuel oil currently employed to dry the starch product. Excess biogas will be utilised in generators to produce electricity or flared instead of released to the atmosphere.

The benefits
Social
- Creates temporary employment opportunities during construction and permanent employment during operation;
Economic
- The project will act as a clean technology demonstration project, which could be replicated across Thailand and the region;
- It will act as an important capacity building project, nationally and locally, especially demonstrating the use of a new financial mechanism for funding of the renewable energy and waste management sector via the CDM
- Increase the diversity and security of Thailand’s energy supply
Environmental
- The project will make use of material currently considered a waste material that gives rise to a considerable hazard i.e. the flammable methane rich biogas emitted
