Rural Biogas in Vietnam
- Technology: Household Devices
- Region: Asia
This project improves the lives of smallholder farmers in Vietnam by enabling them to convert animal manure into biogas for cooking, lighting and hot water.
Typically located in remote, rural areas, the biogas plants allow farmers to store manure in sealed tanks, where it breaks down to release biogas. This avoids the need to collect wood fuel from local forests, and provides a clean, reliable and cost-effective source of power. By 2018, the project will support 180,000 biogas plants, reaching more than 840,000 people across Vietnam. The plants are designed to last for at least 20 years, while building and maintaining them creates jobs for local people.
